Will Apple’s Supply Chain Let it Down with the New iPad?

There's been much buzz in the Apple community about whether Apple will be able to meet initial demand for its new iPad. Many Apple enthusiasts would agree with the statement that Apple's new product supply chains usually take time to flex to keep up with order demand (not to mention early supply chain/supplier quality issues). When it comes to early defects, it feels like Apple sometimes sweeps issues under the screen, so to speak (when the 3G iPhone came out, someone close to my local Apple store told me to hold off on buying one until they worked out the supply chain kinks, because of overheating and battery issues). After reading stories like this, which suggest potential problems with iPad suppliers such as Foxconn (AKA: Hon Hai Precision), it would seem that the iPad may continue Apple's tradition of disappointing hopeful customers who must get in the virtual (and even physical) queue for the product.

According to the above-linked story on Cnet, Peter Misek, an analyst with Canaccord Adams, suggested earlier in the month "the production issues could be bad enough to even delay the launch for a month." Misek further notes in the article that "the upcoming iPad launch may be somewhat limited as a manufacturing bottleneck has impacted production of Apple's newest device…an unspecified production problem at the iPad's manufacturer, Hon Hai Precision, will likely limit the launch region to the U.S. and the number of units available to roughly 300K in the month of March, far lower than the company's initial estimate of 1,000K."

Perhaps if Apple's suppliers weren't so busy humoring themselves by abusing reporters or hiring the cheapest (even if it's underage) labor as possible, then maybe they'd get things right this time around with the iPad launch. Granted, while Apple's historic supplier management approaches might leave something a bit to be desired (as Spend Matters recently observed), even more importantly, from a product launch perspective, is the importance of orchestrating such a massive set of supply chain activities required during new product launches (e.g., supplier collaboration, initial product quality, production oversight, distribution, warehousing, multi-channel fulfillment, etc.).

Apple usually gets most of this right. The problem is that a single weakness in the entire chain can throw things off, as it so often does during initial product launches at the scale of which Apple requires. Because of this, and other historical Apple product launch precedent, I'd handicap the odds that they can meet both initial demand and historic quality/warrant claim norms (as a representation of initial production quality) at about the same time that my iPhone 3G’s battery can make it through the middle of the afternoon without a recharge.

Richard D Rich's Gravatar I like this piece. Sounds like Apple could have some use for risk managing their supply chain. The information could possibly involve some of the risks identified by the Corporate Executive Board in my blog of yesterday.

Strategic change management, increased competitive pressures, talent management, commodity prices may be in play here. There are additonal risks that could be discussed with suppliers, in a risk project setting, dealing with performance related to deliveries, manufacturing schedules and inventory support as examples.

Risk managing your supply chain drills down on the problems, identifies risk triggering events, develops mitigation strategies for those events and it does so in today's environment with the strategic players involved. It also serves as the historian of such efforts as all that is documented will have to be revisted at a later date when time brings changes. That keeps things flexible and adaptive so the change that will occur between now and the time this will be revisted can be addressed.

I would suggest that if these suppliers can have such a negative impact on a widely publicized launch, there certainly is some need for risk managing this supply chain and with the suppliers as part of the the project team.
